Hmm, is there supposed to be something wrong with fluff? I'm sure people come here for all sorts of reasons. Some of you provide a lot of serious research about the Bible, the WTS and all manner of things. I don't happen to read any of the research about the Bible since I don't believe it ( the Bible) to be a particularly outstanding literary work. Give me a Hemmingway novel any day. I don't much care for trivial detail about the WTS because I've already satisfied myself that it is a fraudulent religious cult. Their doctrines are not based on scholarly research but are designed to manipulate a hapless multitude of dupes.

For you guys providing research, please carry on. While I'm not interested I'm sure hundreds of others are. I come here to be amused and entertained. Sometimes I like to be argumentative and sometimes I like to be agreeable. To those providing their JW horror stories and experiences, thank you. I do enjoy most of them. And to those who post interesting and humorous anecdotes, I enjoy them.

As far as valuable information is concerned, the UN expose and the Silent Lambs information was outstanding. But do I really care about the trinity doctrine, the cross as a Christian symbol, or the society's attitude toward gays? Not really. I guess when this forum stops furnishing me anything of interest, I'll drop it from my favorites list. Nor do I think the WTS can be rehabilitated into a nice mainstream religion or informal group of sincere Bible believers. My rejection of it is absolutely complete.

What is a JW childhood like?

i was wondering what it is like to experience childhood in the org.

i am an aspiring writer ad the org has always interested me...not in the sense that i'd like to join.

Growing up as a JW was difficult for a lot of the reasons mentioned in previous posts. There were some good times, to be sure. On of my JW friends and I used to love to fish and we would go on many fishing trips together. Another of my JW friends would invite me over to play Hearts or Pinnocle with his family until all hours of the night. Being a JW wasn't just a religion, it identified who I was. I think that is the reason so many former JW's come to this and other web sites like it. Those of us who are out have new identities and we still like to stay in touch with the old. Not that we want to go back, we're just morbidly curious.

When non JW's leave a church or religion, it generally isn't as big a problem because they don't think of themselves as a Catholic first, or a Baptist or Presbyterian, etc. Their religion is simply a part of their life. They don't consider it all of their life. Of course in other religions, if you leave, you don't lose the fellowship of all of your former friends and relatives.

It's interesting that when I read some of your stories about life as a JW I feel sorry for you, and yet I don't feel sorry for myself. I look back with disappointment because of what I could have done or could have been, but it doesn't make me crazy. I've moved on in so many ways.

Who Here Believes in God?

personally, i do not believe god ever has or ever will exist.

i have my reasons -- i guess i could be considered an agnostic, rather than an athiest.

i was curious to see what the larger part of the former borg community believed, now looking from the outside in, rather than the opposite.

I'm a non-believer, an athiest, a turd on the highway of mortality. God is a convenience for people who need help for problems that cannot be solved. I'm not against people that need God or believe in God. Some religion is useful for teaching moral lessons and some religion is dangerous, like most of Islam and Jehovah's Witnesses.

We are all more or less irrelevant. There have been many contributors over time who's actions have made our lives more comfortable, at least in the civilized world, but even they are a speck on a gnats ass. Enjoy every day and treat it as if it were your last, because it very well could be. A well to do man in my neighborhood went to Scotland with his son to play golf last week. He was in his late 50's to early 60's. While approaching the T box he stumbled and fell hitting his head against a concrete bench. He died instantly. I know it's not a unique occurance, but it had an impact on me, because it reminds me of how unpredictable our lives can be. Death and golf don't usually go hand in hand.

one of the most interesting things that i have noticed about being a witness is the awe that is given to bethelites.

it seems that if you are a bethelite, you are accorded special privleges in congregations.

you are honored when you visit a hall.

When I was at Bethel I worked on the seventh floor on a printing press in the corner. I used to yell out the window at people walking on the sidewalk below, "HELP ME, I'M BEING HELD AGAINST MY WILL!" I hated the place, the attitudes and the hypocrisy. I also looked at the old men who had been there forever with nowhere else to go and vowed that I would never end up like they did. I also vowed to get laid as soon as possible. I will admit that had I been more sinister and less righteous (self righteous) I would have used my status with JW girls to my advantage and gotten laid while there. We used to go to a lot of parties in Jersey when I was there and there were always a ton of hot young girls, lot's of drinkiing and doting mothers who wanted their daughters to latch on to a Bethelite. What a shitty thing to wish on ones daughter.

Why do so many people believe that jesus is god?

i still say that, christiaity is f--- up in these last days.. christianity teaches that the messiah is god, when the bible clearly points out that jesus is a prophet sent by god... jesus prayed to god<----that's the biggest proof... so i think if anybody believe that jesus is god, is not only an'-ti-christ(not accepting) but also a liar, foolish, and you knoweth nothing, and you are not close to god or christ, you are closer to that devil which we call satan....

Many Christian's believe that Jesus is God because the Bible tells them that Jesus is God and that the Holy Ghost is God. Only the WTS has dishonestly changed words and punctuation in their pathetic attempt to translate the scriptures. Talk about literary dishonesty. Now, I don't happen to be one who believes in a transcendant being at all, but if one is going to adhere to the beliefs of the Bible with regard to "God", then it should be just as simple to comprehend God as a trinity as it is to comprehend a God who is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent. JW's don't argue against those characteristics in their notion of God.

The problem with JW thinking when it comes to trying to understand the Bible and concepts of God begins with their arrogance in thinking that they can make logical sense out of the mystical. That somehow, there is black and white understanding when it comes to stories about a man-God who healed the sick, raised the dead, fed the multitudes, and walked on water. Make sense out of those tricks Bunky and then we can proceed to understanding a triune God.

All of the JW false doctrines about the Bible and what it means are nothing new. From Roman times until today, people and groups of people have tried to put their own spin and explanation on the Bible. Personally, I believe it is nothing more than a mythological moral code book. And it is very useful as that in many ways. But the WTS proves that it can also be very dangerous and ruin many lives when in the hands of the dishonest. The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society is a dishonest and corrupt group of psuedo scholars, who have figured out a marketing scheme that has hit the jackpot.

Oh well, another day, another rant!

something on the song thread that i posted, song by tu pac, got me to thinking about racisim.

why do people discriminate against people that have different color skin?

i understand it is a learned response, but my "elder" father is very racist... and this is how i was raised.. i don't get it.

Racism is really nothing more than the negative beliefs that another person or group of people are inferior to another person or group of people solely on the basis of that person or groups race. It's a belief system. Like any belief system it is learned. Children learn it from parents, other children and their peers as they grow up. Most educated people today don't believe that race is a determinant in ones intellect or intrinsic value to society.

I believe what many people unfairly judge people by is the culture they come from and the observable economic status of that culture. One thing most of us FEAR is poverty. Poverty itself is considered a negative condition and we view those living in poverty as having an inferior work ethic to ours. We see poverty as a prerequisite to criminal activity. I think the media portrays those living in poverty as people who don't matter as much. Think about it for a moment. How would the media portray a truck loaded with migrant workers who had suffocated to death while being smuggled into the country as opposed to how would they portray a bus crash that resulted in the deaths of a group of prep school kids? I believe we suffer more from culturalism and economicism than from racism. When people use degrading expressions about blacks, they aren't thinking about a black businessman who lives in an expensive apartment on the upper east side of Manhattan. When they use degrading expressions about Hispanics, they aren't referring to Jennifer Lopez or other famous Hispanics. They are expressing their economic biases. People of other races whom we percieve as being in our economic strata are somehow less threatening than those living in abject poverty.

Racism is a term that gets thrown around too much for politically correct reasons. If one can be labeled a racist, then their entire persona can be trivialized. Frankly, I believe stupid people throw around the term racism in hopes that others won't see how stupid they are in their pathetic little real lives. "I'm not a racist and you are, therefore I'm good and you're bad."

I admit that I've changed my opinions about a lot of things over the past few decades. The farther I get from being a JW, the more accepting I am of other people and other cultures. My father was extremely distrusting of Jews. In the era in which he grew up, people feared others whom they didn't understand and Jews, Blacks and even Asians were not understood by people in his day. JW's will promote the notion that they aren't burdened by "racism" or judging others by their race, but in reality, I've known hundreds of JW's who look down their noses as people from other cultures. Remember, this is the same group of people who claim that they have cornered the market on Christian love, yet unmercifully shun people who have made mistakes. Saying one is loving, or accepting of others does not make it so.

Sorry, I just felt the need to ramble this morning!

Soooo not out! Talking to an ex-jw...

well, i damn near put my foot in it this evening.

a friend of mine who is well aware of my continuing friendship with a jw (now allegedly ex-jw) told me i should meet an ex-jw that he knows.

i felt pretty excited about meeting an ex-jw face to face as i've longed for a chance to speak honestly with someone who knows the organization well and my friend isn't ready to really discuss the issues yet.

As I was reading your post I was reminded of just how gradual my leaving the organization was. Even when I would have been considered OUT by their standards, much of their belief system still occupied small corners of my brain.

My first step in leaving was the disallusionment I had with trying to live my life up to the high standards of the organization and seeing the hypocritical lives of other JW's. The shear frustration of not being able to measure up caused me serious personal problems. This was a gradual process and I didn't express my concerns verbally to anyone, but simply quit attending meetings regularly and when I did attend an assembly, the words spoken were not even entering my consciousness. In the background, I had a sense of how unloving the organizations elders were when it came to dealing with the people they were supposed to help. I lived with tremendous guilt for many years with the cloud of dying at Armeggedon constatnly hanging over my head.

In 1984 I read Crisis of Conscience and that opened my eyes to the corruption of the organization, and yet the doctrines I had been taught over 30 plus years still seemed valid. But, I was willing at this point to consider other viewpoints of the Bible. The first time I attended the Baptist Church with my non-JW wife, they had the communion and I didn't participate because in my mind was the idea that it was reserved for only the 144,000. Needless to say, my wife was pissed at me. The blood transfusion issue was also an issue that stuck with me. But when my father needed a blood transfusion for a leg amputation, and I knew my mother would refuse it for him, I immediately stepped in and appoved it. I suppose I could have been sued, but what the hell, my father lived. I began to examine all of these JW doctrines more carefully, reading other books about Witnesses and cults that I purchased at Christian bookstores. After several years, and it did take several years, I began to shed all of the false doctrines I had learned with the Witnesses.

So, it does take some time to get from being an active JW to become a normal person.

This story reminds me of an arrest in Green Cove Springs, FL several years ago where the police caught a man standing on a bucket having sex with a horse. It wasn't his horse and the owner wasn't real happy about the sicko corrupting his mare. If these stories weren't true they'd be funny. What am I talking about, it is funny?
